press release Supporting Energy Transition and Strengthening Communities in Asia-Pacific

chevron understands that achieving change at scale requires partnership and collaboration

Bali, 22 June 2022 – Chevron is pleased to announce it is a founding member of the AVPN Healthcare Pooled Fund, which aims to strengthen primary healthcare in rural and hard-to-reach urban areas of Southeast Asia.

Round II of the Pooled Fund was launched at the AVPN Global Conference 2022 and will focus on Maternal, Newborn, Child Health and Nutrition in Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam. Chevron is contributing $600,000 over the three-years of the Pooled Fund starting from 2021.

At the conference, Chevron is sponsoring and sharing its experience in sessions related to nature-based solutions and STEM education. Since 2018, Chevron contributed $700,000 to a nature-based solution called the Mangrove Ecosystem Restoration Alliance (MERA) program previously in Riau and currently in Jakarta, along with a consortium of industry partners. Part of this program supports the Muara Angke Wildlife Reserve in Jakarta, Indonesia. In 2021, Chevron announced a $2.48 million (AUD$3.45 million) contribution to Conservation Volunteers Australia in support of lower carbon projects.

In the STEM related session, Chevron will share its efforts to promote effective STEM education in Southeast Asia through the Chevron Enjoy Science program, a seven-year $35 million public-private partnership in Thailand. Phase 2 of Enjoy Science, implemented by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Regional Centre for STEM Education, aims to strengthen the capacity of project stakeholders to scale and sustain the impact of Enjoy Science.

"Partnerships are core to our business. We work with local stakeholders, governments, and NGOs to bring additional expertise to complement our community programs, improving results and extending the impact we can have,” said Nigel Hearne, President, Chevron Eurasia Pacific Exploration and Production. “We are committed to help reduce poverty, drive economic and social opportunity, and prepare the workforce of the future in Asia-Pacific.”

Chevron’s partnerships and investments in health, education and economic development advance progress and help strengthen communities across the region. Some examples are listed at the Appendix.

Supporting the energy future of Asia-Pacific
In addition to investing in community programs, Chevron also enables human progress by providing reliable, affordable, and ever-cleaner energy. Chevron has been supporting Asia-Pacific to meet its energy needs for almost a century. The future of energy requires partnership and collaboration because no one company, industry, or nation – acting alone – can meet the world’s energy and climate goals.

Chevron recently announced a low-carbon partnership with Pertamina to help advance Indonesia’s energy transition goals. Aimed at serving local and potentially regional customers, this MoU represents Chevron’s investment in lower carbon energy solutions in partnership with national energy companies, and governments, all of which have a shared interest in advancing national energy transition.

In January 2021, Chevron partnered with Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN) and other public agencies to increase health literacy and an understanding of the One Health approach, with the launch of a two-year, $600,000 program called, “Strengthening One Health Education in Southeast Asia”.

In May 2022, Chevron announced a three-year, $900,000 initiative with the Miller Center to advance climate resilience solutions through social entrepreneurship. The project aims to further climate-smart agriculture, safe water, and reliable low-carbon energy to vulnerable communities in Asia-Pacific through customized support to high potential social enterprises.

For more than 15 years, Chevron has worked with Conservation Volunteers Australia, and in 2021, Chevron Australia announced a AUD$3.45 million contribution to support nature-based solutions to climate change. The initiative will result in 10 wetland locations across Australia receiving critical restoration. The initiative will also contribute to innovative blue carbon research.
