chevron in indonesia

a century of partnership

Chevron is a major partner in Indonesia’s economy and has been an active member of the community since operations began 100 years ago.

Chevron’s partnership with the people and the Government of Indonesia can be traced back to 1924, when the Standard Oil Company of California (Socal), now Chevron, dispatched a geological expedition to the island of Sumatra. In 1941, Chevron drilled into the formation that would become the Duri Field. In 1944, a well near the village of Minas became the largest oil field ever discovered in Southeast Asia. Production began in 1952. Chevron applied numerous technological innovations in Duri Field, which was the world’s largest thermal EOR operation, and a surfactant field trial in Minas Field.

Since 1952, Chevron was the largest oil producer in Indonesia with a cumulative production of 12 billion barrels, supplying about 40% of the country’s total crude oil production until August 8, 2021.

Chevron operated the West Seno Field in Makassar Straits, which began operations in 2003, the first deep-sea operation in Indonesia until 2023.

Up to 2017, Chevron was the largest geothermal producer with a total of 647 MW installed capacity in Indonesia.

In 100 years, Chevron has become a partner of Indonesia, contributing to Indonesia’s energy supply and state revenues, and supporting community development in areas surrounding the operational areas.

Upstream exploration and production

Chevron completed handover of Rokan PSC to the Government of Indonesia after its expiry on 8 August 2021, with a very smooth transition to the next operator, Pertamina.

Chevron has also completed the closing of transaction of share sale of Chevron Makassar Ltd (CML), Chevron Ganal Ltd (CGL), and Chevron Rapak Ltd. (CRL) to Eni Lasmo PLC (Eni) on 2 October 2023. CML, CGL and CRL were Chevron companies which operated deepwater West Seno Field in East Kalimantan and two deepwater natural gas development projects, known collectively as the Indonesia Deepwater Development (IDD)
