Pekanbaru, 5 July 2021 – PT. Chevron Pacific Indonesia (PT CPI) again initiated the environmental care movement through the waste bank program. Together with the Regent of Bengkalis, PT CPI through its partner in the Pematang Pudu Clean Waste Bank (BSPPB) launched the Bengkalis Savings Waste Movement.

"The Bengkalis Government appreciates PT CPI and related stakeholders in initiating and collaborating on the "Bengkalis Saving Waste" activity. Through this movement, we can educate the public to play an active role in reducing the volume of waste in our area," said Bengkalis Regent Kasmarni S.Sos., MMP at the launch event at BSPPB on Monday (5/7). This movement was marked by BSPPB's collaboration with several agencies, such as Bank Riau Kepri and sub-districts.

Besides targeting to reduce the volume of waste, this movement can also provide additional income for the community through the deposited waste. Through waste bank savings, people can earn one hundred thousand to two million rupiah a month from the results of saving waste.

“This waste bank program is proof that we can protect the environment and improve the community's economy at the same time. We are always committed to making social contributions to the communities around our operational areas, in the sector of education, health, economic empowerment and the environment," said PT CPI Asset North Corporate Affairs Manager Rudi Arief in his remarks.

At the launch of the Bengkalis Savings Waste Movement, Head of SKK Migas Sumbagut Representative, Rikky Rahmat Firdaus, and representatives of relevant regional apparatus organizations (OPD) in the Bengkalis Regency Government were also present.

Since 2015, PT CPI has initiated the creation and development of 22 waste bank units spread across several operational areas of the company. In addition to providing assistance for capacity building, PT CPI's social investment program also provided a variety of assistance ranging from uniforms, counting equipment, garbage press machines to operational vehicles.

The assistance in the form of operational tools has increased the production of processed waste up to seven times. In a day, BSPPB is able to manage 400-500 kilograms of plastic waste. The customers recorded in the waste bank also reached 786 people from the community, government agencies, shops, workshops, and schools spread across the Districts of Mandau, Pinggir and Bathin Solapan.

Waste bank customers can exchange several types of waste including bottles, paper, plastic, metal, and others. The waste will be accumulated and can be exchanged for electricity tokens, groceries, or cash.

“We are grateful for PT CPI's contribution in increasing the capacity of waste banks in several sub-districts in Bengkalis Regency. The guidance and assistance provided really helped us in improving the quality of our services and production in managing waste for the Bengkalis community,” said Lambas, Chair of the Pematang Pudu Bersih Waste Bank.

To run this program, PT CPI partnered with LPPM Lancang Kuning University as an implementing partner since 2019. Various trainings were provided to the fostered waste banks, including training on fertilizer production, paving blocks, work safety training, product packaging and online marketing through various social media platforms.

The waste bank management program is one of PT CPI's social investment programs in the environment and economic empowerment sector. Along with UNILAK, FLiPMas BATOBO and LPPM UNRI to be the partners in assisting waste banks in Pekanbaru. PT CPI's other social investment programs in the environmental sector include mangrove conservation with the Nusantara Nature Conservation Foundation (Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara/YKAN); elephant conservation with the Indonesian Elephant Association (PGI); The Peat Care Village Program in Siak and Rokan Hilir collaborates with the Peat Restoration Agency (BRG).
