Pekanbaru, October 22, 2020 – As many as 20 farmer groups, across Riau received food security aid from PT. Chevron Pacific Indonesia (PT CPI) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The aid was tailored to meet the agricultural production, training and assistance needs of each group. These farmer groups will also receive digital training for marketing their products.
The food security program pioneered by PT CPI will run for approximately six months and will be monitored to ensure continuity. Spread throughout the PT CPI operation area, the groups receiving support are in Dumai, Rokan Hilir, Bengkalis, Siak, Kampar and Pekanbaru.
“PT CPI took the initiative to support the government’s efforts in overcoming COVID-19 economic impacts, specifically in the agricultural sector, and strengthening food supply stability,” said Tamrin in his welcome speech.
Syahfalefi, M.Si., who serves as the province’s head of food, crops and horticulture and represented Riau’s governor at the event, stated that “This food security support from PT CPI is consistent with the provincial government’s goal to achieve food independency and maintain the stability of food prices during the COVID-19 pandemic period.”
Also attending the event, M. Ridwan Dermawan, the division head of Geology and Groundwater Service Riau Energy and Mineral Resources; Yanin Kholison, SKK Migas representative for Northern Sumatra, or; and Unri Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Aras Mulyadi DEA.
In this program PT CPI is partnering with Unri Research Institution and Community Service (LPPM Unri). This institution conducts verification, aid distribution, and accompaniment of the farmer groups. PT CPI is also partnering with the Center of Entrepreneurship, Change and Third Sector Universitas Trisakti (CECT Trisakti) to provide digital marketing training.
Dr. Mulyadi expressed Riau University’s appreciation to PT CPI for entrusting LPPM Unri to distribute and assist in the aid program. Unri is celebrating its 58th anniversary, and PT CPI’s food security program is in line with the theme of the anniversary, “Established Unri, Independent Food Riau, Progressive Indonesia.” Maria R Nindita Radyati, Ph.D., Director of CECT Trisakti University, said the food security program is needed by communities affected by COVID-19, especially in the economic sector. The program significantly contributes to achieving numerous Sustainable Development Goals/SDGs, in particular “Zero Hunger”, “Clean Water and Sanitation”, “Sustainable Cities and Communities” and “Partnerships for the Goals.”
In addition to supporting the emergency response aid program, PT CPI operates Chevron’s Riau Cherish Program, or Riau Sehat Sejahtera, a food security aid program for 20 Riau farmer groups; established a COVID-19 standby village in partnership with Indonesia Civilian Humanity Foundation, or Yayasan Kemanusiaan Madani Indonesia (YKMI); and constructed a clean water well in partnership with Riau Muhammadiyah University LPPM.
During the pandemic, PT CPI is committed to donate the total of 11.6 million rupiahs. In addition, SKK Migas – PT CPI distributed approximately 2,000 hazmat suits; 99,000 face masks; 6,000 bottles of hand sanitizer; 73 medical beds and mattresses; infrared thermometer; and 3,700 grocery packages.
